Alexander Norbash, M.D., M.S.

Dean, School of Medicine, University of Missouri-Kansas City

Alexander Norbash, MD, MS, returned to his alma mater on 3/11/2024 as Dean of the University of Missouri–Kansas City School of Medicine. A proud graduate of UMKC’s six-year BA/MD program, he began a career of contributions to scholarship, innovation, and institutional leadership. He completed his radiology residency at St. Francis Medical Center in Pittsburgh and the University of Pittsburgh, followed by fellowships in diagnostic and interventional neuroradiology at Stanford University. He later earned a master’s degree in healthcare management from Harvard University.

Over the course of three decades, Dr. Norbash has been a participant and contributor to academic radiology at some of the nation’s leading medical institutions. He served as chairman of the Department of Radiology at Boston University from 2004 to 2015, and subsequently as chairman of the Department of Radiology at the University of California San Diego until 2024. Earlier in his career, he held senior leadership roles at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where he served as chief of diagnostic neuroradiology, founding chief of interventional neuroradiology, and founding chief of endovascular neurosurgery, with his academic appointment through Harvard Medical School. He also served on the faculties of Stanford University and the Massachusetts General Hospital.

At UC San Diego, Dr. Norbash’s leadership extended beyond radiology. From 2017 to 2020, he served as associate vice chancellor for diversity, equity and inclusion, with principal responsibilities for climate and professional development across the graduate and undergraduate campuses. He also served as founding principal faculty advisor for UC San Diego’s Blue LINC (Learn, Innovate, Network and Collaborate) and HealthLink biodesign initiatives, reflecting a longstanding commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration, mentorship, and translational innovation.

Nationally, Dr. Norbash has been a voice in organized medicine and radiology leadership. He has served as president of the American Roentgen Ray Society, the Society of Chairs of Academic Radiology Departments, the Massachusetts Radiological Society, and the New England Roentgen Ray Society, and as vice president of the American College of Radiology. He was the founding chair of the ACR Head Injury Institute, chaired the ACR Board of Chancellors Neuroradiology Commission, and helped shape the Radiology Leadership Institute as a founding board member and longtime chair of its national summit.

A prolific lecturer, innovator, and entrepreneur, Dr. Norbash has delivered more than 500 invited lectures on six continents, helped develop endovascular tools and products, and co-founded multiple startup companies including a long-lasting imaging core laboratory. Across each chapter of his career, his work has been guided by the same aspirations: advancing medicine, cultivating leaders, and strengthening the institutions that serve patients, learners, and communities.
