Jonathan Baines, M.D., Ph.D.

Medical Director, Native American Pathway Programs, Mayo Clinic

Jonathan E. Baines, MD, PhD (Tlingit/Tsimshian) is a Native American physician-scientist, educator, and family physician at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Board-certified in family medicine, he practices across the continuum of care—outpatient primary care, adult hospital medicine, procedures, and obstetrics. He also brings experience from rural practice in the Mayo Clinic Health System.

He is a founding member and Vice President of the Indigenous School of Medicine—an initiative working to build the first fully Indigenous-owned and Indigenous-led medical school in the United States.

At Mayo Clinic, Dr. Baines serves as Medical Director of the Native American Pathway Programs, supporting recruitment, mentorship, and learner success for American Indian and Alaska Native students. He teaches in the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine and the Mayo Clinic Family Medicine Residency, serves on the MD admissions committee, and contributes nationally to holistic, mission-aligned admissions practices as a member of the Association of American Medical Colleges’ Advancing Mission-Aligned Principles Advisory Committee. Within Mayo Clinic, he is a member of the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center.

As a physician-scientist, Dr. Baines’ scholarship bridges cancer biology, screening, and Indigenous health equity. He has held leadership roles advancing community-engaged cancer research, including co-director of Spirit of E.A.G.L.E.S. (the American Indian/Alaska Native Initiative on Cancer) and medical director of Native C.I.R.C.L.E. within Mayo Clinic’s Native American Programs.

Dr. Baines holds dual bachelor’s degrees in chemistry and microbiology from Arizona State University and combined MD and PhD degrees from the Mayo Clinic MD/PhD program. He was the first American Indian MD/PhD graduate at Mayo Clinic.
